The 1890s Project

The Yakama Nation's 1890s Side Channel Restoration project restored perennial flows to nearly a mile of an historic side channel of the Methow River north of Twisp. This side channel was actually the river's main channel in the 1890s before it was cut off by roads and levees. This project is unusual in that the restored channel is fed entirely by groundwater. This groundwater enters a collection system called a Groundwater Infiltration Gallery and then flows through a pipe into the historic channel. This system means that the water is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, providing a more hospitable environment for juvenile fish and other species. Rootwads placed in the channel provide additional habitat.
